Albendazole is a broad-spectrum benzimidazole anthelmintic. After hepatic conversion to albendazole sulfoxide, it selectively disrupts microtubules in helminths, impairing nutrient uptake and energy metabolism.
Albendazole is rapidly oxidized by hepatic enzymes to albendazole sulfoxide, which selectively binds beta-tubulin in intestinal and tegumental cells of helminths. By preventing microtubule polymerization, it disrupts glucose uptake, depletes glycogen stores, and halts intracellular transport, leading to ATP exhaustion and immobilization of larvae and adult worms. Sustained tissue exposure of the active metabolite provides ovicidal activity vital for cysticercosis and hydatid disease management.
