Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis with improved stability against beta-lactamases from respiratory pathogens.
Cefuroxime binds penicillin-binding proteins, inhibiting peptidoglycan synthesis and disrupting the bacterial cell wall. The axetil prodrug is hydrolyzed in the intestinal mucosa to active cefuroxime after oral dosing.
