Erythromycin is a macrolide that halts bacterial protein synthesis and also stimulates GI motility via motilin receptors.
Erythromycin binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit and blocks translocation of peptides, halting bacterial protein synthesis. It is bacteriostatic at typical pediatric serum levels but can be bactericidal against highly susceptible organisms when concentrations are high.
