Albuterol (Salbutamol) AdministrationSafe & Effective Dosing for Children

Hearing your child wheeze can be scary—albuterol is a quick‑relief inhaler that usually starts helping within minutes. Using a spacer with the inhaler and calm, simple steps helps medicine reach the lungs comfortably and effectively.

Back to Albuterol (Salbutamol) Overview

Administration Instructions

Shake the inhaler well. Attach the inhaler to the spacer. Have your child sit upright. Place the spacer mouthpiece between the lips (or use a well‑fitting mask for younger children) with a good seal. Press the inhaler once to release a puff into the spacer, then have your child take slow, deep breaths (or 6 normal breaths) to inhale the medicine. Wait about 30–60 seconds before a second puff if prescribed. If using a nebulizer, give the entire treatment until the chamber is empty.

Helpful Tips

Gentle reminders: two puffs are commonly used for symptoms; repeat per your asthma action plan. For exercise‑induced symptoms, many clinicians advise 2 puffs 15–20 minutes before activity. Keep the spacer clean and bring inhalers/spacers to appointments to check technique.

Important Safety Information

Seek urgent care for severe breathing trouble (pulling in at ribs/neck, inability to speak, bluish lips), need for frequent puffs without relief, or if your child looks very tired or confused.

You're Doing Great

You’re doing the right things—calm, steady technique plus your action plan helps your child breathe easier.
